1.2 CLASSIFICATION OF AUTOMOBILES

The automobiles may be broadly classified on the following basis.

1) According to the purpose of use.

(a) Passenger vehicles such as Scooters, Motor cycles, Cars, Jeeps, Buses

(b) Goods vehicles such as Trucks, Tractors

(c) Special purpose vehicles such as Ambulance, Fire engine, Cranes etc.

2) According to the fuel used. The automobiles, according to the fuel used are as follows:

(a) Gasoline (Petrol) vehicles such as Scooters, Motor cycles, Cars, Jeeps

(b) Diesel vehicles such as Buses, Trucks, Cars (Diesel variants)

(c) Electric vehicles such as Battery operate & buses, Fork lifts

(d) Gas vehicles such as CN9 and LPG cars, CNG buses

(e) Hybrid vehicles such as Hybrid cars (Petrol and Battery driven).

3) According to the number ofwheels. The automobiles, according to the number of wheels are as follows:

(a) Two wheelers such as Scooters, Motor cycles, Mopeds

(b) Three wheelers such as Auto-rickshaws, Tempo

(c) Four wheelers such as Cars, Jeeps

(d) Six wheelers such as Buses, Trucks

(e) Eight or more wheels such as Special transporting vehicles (e.g. trailers)

4) According to the drive of the vehicle. The automobiles, according to the drive of the vehicle are as follows:

(a) Single wheel drive vehicles such as Scooters, Motor cycles

(b) Two wheel drive vehicles such as Three wheelers, Cars, Buses, Trucks

(c) Four wheel drive vehicles such as Jeeps, Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV's)

5) According to the capacity. The automobiles, according to the capacity are as follows

(a) L.M.V (Light Motor Vehicle) such as Scooters, Motor cycles, Cars, Jeep

(b) H.M.V (Heavy Motor Vehicle) such as Buses, Trucks, Tractors

6) According to their construction. The automobiles, according to the construction
follows:

(a) Single unit vehicles such as Cars, Jeeps, Buses, Trucks

(b) Articulated vehicles such as Trucks (trailers), Tractors
